What is PFAS? PFAS (polyfluoroalkyl substances) are
synthetic organofluorine chemical compounds that have multiple fluorine atoms attached to an alkyl chain. They are a group of man-made chemicals that don’t break down and can accumulate over time. There is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse human health effects.
What are PFAS chemicals?
Most notably, PFAS chemicals include
PFOA, PFOS, & GenX. According to OECD, there are at least 4730 different PFASs.
What are PFAS used for? PFAS are used for
creating stain and water repellent fabrics, nonstick products (e.g., Teflon), polishes, waxes, paints, cleaning products, and fire-fighting foams.
How to filter PFAS out of water?
In general, PFAS resist most conventional chemical treatment technologies employed by local water municipalities. The strongest proven technologies to filter PFAS out of water
include granular activated carbon absorption, ion exchange resins, and reverse osmosis.
What does PFAS do to your body? Exposure to PFAS may result in negative health effects to your body.
Some identified by the EPA include:
Developmental effects to fetuses during pregnancy or to breastfed infants
Developmental effects to children
Testicular or kidney cancer
Immune effects (antibody production and immunity)
How to test for PFAS?
